Photograph of MAX experiment before launch. The gondola is attached to a
flight train which is held by "Tiny Tim," the launch
vehicle. After the balloon is inflated and there is sufficient lift,
Tiny Tim releases the flight train. Launches occur near sunset when
the winds are at a minimum. An aluminum baffle that reduces the
effects of millimeter-wave radiation from the ground can be seen in
the front of the gondola. Electronics are carried in the two side
compartments.
