Overview

Brief Module Summary

This unit is designed to use several different formats to present the concepts of speed and velocity. The unit contains teacher and student background, webbased activities, a hands on activity, and a worksheet. We have also provided pre and post tests and a sample lesson plan.

Learning Objectives

We do not expect students to grasp the mathematical concept of vector, but to qualitatively understand that some quantities have direction and others do not.

The unit emphasizes the following concepts:

What is the difference between speed and velocity?

What are path, displacement and trajectory?

How do we measure velocity as a vector?

What are the different kinds of motion?

How do we calculate speed as a number?

What is the difference between path and displacement?

Student Pre-Requisites

Basic math skills of adding, subtracting, multiplying and division

Ready to be introduced to equations such as distance = time*speed
